One of the most famous cured hams in the world, San Daniele in Friuli is possibly the most elite of them all . It has a beautifully mellow cured taste and just perfect with a glass of red, some cheese and great conversational company. We have recently introduced the Tapas menu at our Blackheath branch, where you can indulge in this very decadent meat for yourself along with many other great complimentary tapas dishes.
Some history for you...
The hills and plains of San Daniele in Friuli , a region naturally “climatized” by the cold northern air and the warm Adriatic currents which are mixed to perfection by the flow of the river Tagliamento, have created the birthplace of one of the best known hams.
In ancient times the San Daniele hill in Friuli became an important settlement. The Celts, the first to experiment with salt as a means of preserving food, are known to have enjoyed pork meat and as early as 400BC had already discovered the properties of the region’s idyllic micro-climate and hence developed a predilection for maturing legs of pork from an autochthonous local breed known as Nera Friulana.
Even the Ancient Romans were familiar with this ham and the ancestor of the San Daniele symbol (a whole ham complete with trotter) appears on the gravestone of a butcher from Portogruaro.
These ancient people had therefore already ascertained that the low humidity, the excellent ventilation and the general climate of these foothills created an ideal combination of functional factors not only for the preservation of meat but, more so, for improving its organoleptic qualities.
We hope you enjoy it as much as we have bringing it just to you…
These mild aroma hops, give our Mango flavoured ale, (with a hint of ale character), an overall a balanced craft beer. The malt flavour is hidden with the low hop bitterness to allow the fruit notes to dominate. Always easy to drink on a sunny day, we recommend its great 365 days of the year too!
Light-medium bodied, crisp and clean with low carbonation. It is slightly sweet with tropical fruitiness all around. Mango notes to begin with and finishes off with a malty flavour. It is a blend of fruit, grain, lemon and wheat. Simply put, it's a holiday in a pint glass!
Great pairing with savory and sweet dishes, like our Peking Duck Pizza. It’s just as delicious with desserts too as it mirrors the slight sweet notes, with its exceptional balanced sweet and malty character. It's unique compared to many other fruit beers.
